In 2016, arts and entertainment contributed N54b to Nigeria’s GDP

This has come despite the entire economy shrinking by 2.24% since 2015

According to the Nigerian Gross Domestic Product Report released by the National Bureau of Statistics, the arts and entertainment industry experienced a growth of 1.86% to 12.81% in the third quarter of the year, contributing N54b to the country’s GDP.
The report is done quarterly to provide information about the current economic status of the country.

The entire economy has shrunk by 2.24% since 2015 and receded by 0.18% from the previous quarter.
The arts and entertainment industry too experienced a recession as the growth seen in this quarter is 3.45% less than it was at this time last year.
One would imagine this decline in the entertainment industry to be as a result, of course, of the general economic conditions.

For entertainers, it has meant less shows and concerts in the early part of the year; as well as loss of juicy brand endorsement deals for several artistes.
However, going by the figures provided by the report, the tide seems to be turning for the better.

The reinvention of Lagos Bar Beach as the party capital of Nigeria

TLSP puts Lagos on the same pedestal with other cities like Miami, Ibiza and the Greek island, Ios where nonstop parties are looked forward to throughout the year.
The five-kilometre strip of road known as Ahmadu Bello Way on Victoria Island has seen many things since it was carved out of the Kuramo Waters in the late 1940s to the mid-50s.
If you’d listened to stories by older people that grew up in that era, you would have heard nostalgic tales about the sprawling waterfront and beach.

With palm trees and cabanas, the entirety of that road was white sands and blue waters.  It also was the site of several churches whose members would carry our prayer sessions by the water. Wole Soyinka‘s play Trials of Brother Jero was set on the Bar Beach.
However, by the ’70s, the idyllic nature of the waterfront had been broken by the continuous construction of the business district in the otherwise tranquil environment.
The fact that it was also used as an execution ground for the notorious armed robbers that bedeviled Lagos then was of no help to the tourism potential the place held.

It is said that in 1971 at the execution of the notorious Ishola Oyenusi, over 30,000 people were on the beach to witness the macabre sight.
After the perpetual ocean surges and flooding that plagued Ahmadu Bello Way in the last decade or so, along with the Eko Atlantic City that is literally coming out of the Atlantic Ocean, it is gradually becoming the new site of entertainment and tourism for Lagos and the whole West African coast.
In recent years it has played host to the annual One Lagos Fiesta on New Year’s Eve, that sees over a hundred thousand people usher in the new year with music and fireworks.

More recently, the All Africa Music Awards created a Music Village on the Bar Beach for its 2016 event.
But all that is incomparable with the two-day Lagos Street Party coming up today and tomorrow. An estimated 500,000 people are expected to have a massive street party over the course of 48 hours.
The appropriately named Lagos Street Party puts Lagos on the same pedestal with other cities like Miami, Ibiza and the Greek island,  where nonstop parties are looked forward to throughout the year. It further proves that Lagos is the place to be during the yuletide celebrations.
This epic celebration is organized by the Lagos State Government in conjunction with White Star Entertainment and will feature some of Nigeria’s finest entertainers including M.I Abaga, Olamide, Kaffy, Ice Prince, Phyno, DJs Spinall and Lambo; as well as activities that will make the two-day rave a must-attend.

For Lagosians and visitors who have had a long year and looking forward to the end of the year, there’s no better way to ‘turn up’.
‘We’re working with all the right partners, and doing everything according to global standards, to make sure visitors and Lagosians have the time of their lives,’
says Akin Akinyelure, Project Coordinator. The Lagos Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde further adds, ‘It’s a party for everybody. As a government, our mission is to establish a renowned commerce platform in Lagos that promotes culture, art and tourism in the entertainment eco-system.’
The Lagos Street Party has all the hallmarks of an international street rave and it is gratifying that on the same beach where only a few years ago seemed like a rundown eyesore on the Lagos map, is becoming an entertainment hotspot for Nigeria and Africa.
Beyond that, it is a testament of realization of the managers of the Lagos brand (in this case the Lagos State Government) that the power of Lagos lies in its ability to attract not only people seeking economic advancement because of the state’s financial buoyancy, or the capacity to provide the thrills that make life interesting to live, but most importantly, the capacity to continuously reinvent itself and deliver world class experiences, all the time.

Runtown Sued For N14m For Failing to Perform in Anambra

Runtown is being sued for N14.3m by an Anambra State youth association, Dynamic Minds League, over allegations that he failed to perform at their New Year’s Day carnival.

The association claim Runtown breached a contract to perform at a state-wide carnival that held on January 1, 2015 in Adazi-Nnukwu town, Anambra State after collecting N800,000. The fee was paid to Runtown through his record label, Eric Many Entertainment.
In the lawsuit filed before a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, the group claim to have also lost revenue in terms of what it spent on printing fliers to promote the show’s tickets, flight tickets, and accommodation for the artiste and his manager.
‘Due to the absence of Runtown, the association lost millions of naira in expected profit and severe damage to its reputation which has a grave impact on the association’s ability to stage events, attract patrons and compete with rival carnival/show organisers in Anambra State and environs,’ the petitioner said.
Runtown, through his lawyer, has reportedly filed an initial opposition, stating lack of jurisdiction.
The case has been adjourned till January 25, 2017 for further hearing.

Toyin Aimakhu’s ex, Seun Egbegbe tries to steal N3m worth of iPhones

One wonders if Seun Egbegbe was hypnotised to steal the phones as it makes no sense for someone who’s acquired some wealth to steal what he can afford.

Movie producer and actress Toyin Aimakhu’s ex, Seun Egbegbe was arrested yesterday morning for trying to steal nine i Phones at Computer Village, Ikeja.

The nine items; seven pieces of iPhone 6s and two pieces of iPhone 7, are valued at about N3m going by the present selling price.
Seun had tried to flee the scene in a jeep after the incident, which happened around 10 a.m. yesterday morning, November 22, 2016, but passers-by were quick to nab him.

One wonders if Seun Egbegbe was hypnotised to steal the iPhones because it makes no sense for someone who’s acquired some wealth to steal what he can easily afford.

Seun and Toyin started dating less than three months after the actress separated from her husband of two years, Adeniyi Johnson over infidelity allegations last year.

Their romance ended in February this year following the actress’ kidnapping that was linked to the movie producer, who many say is a serial woman beater and jealous lover.

She told Saturday Beats that the pact she had with God is to have a man by her side by the time she marks her 50th birthday.

I was waiting for my children to grow and become teenagers so that I would have given them all of my time so that there would not be divided attention between them and the new daddy or husband. Now I am through with all that, I am ready for a new husband.”
The singer who said it had not been easy praised God who has given her the grace to see her through trying times.
“It has been the ‘mega’ grace of God for me to do all I am involved with and still be a single mother. I ask myself if I am human sometimes because I combine a lot of things together. As we speak, I am at a rehearsal and before I left home, I had to make lunch, do the laundry and I would still check my children’s homework because their exam is coming up. I cannot afford to delegate duties when it comes to my children. What you want to see in the future is what you put in the picture now, so I can never be too busy for my children and my ministry. I am a church girl to the core. It has been the grace of God,” she said.
However, while many gospel singers frown against collaborating with secular singers, KSB, welcomes them with open arms. So far, she has collaborated with the likes of the late Da Grin, Terry G, MI, Ice Prince, to mention a few.
In a chat with DA- PLAYPOINT, the singer said that although she has been condemned a lot for featuring secular musicians in her songs, she is only doing the bidding of God.
She said, “The condemnation I have got from people because I collaborate with secular musicians has been ‘mega’ but there is an adage in Yoruba that says, ‘when you are commissioned to do a job, it is who sent you that you revere and not the person you are to deliver the message to’. This is because you are answerable to the person that gave you the assignment. In my case, such condemnation was expected but they were not the one that gave me the assignment. If God gives you an assignment and you carry it out, your reward is from the person that gave you the assignment.
“When I was singing praise, it was the assignment I got. When I was to do evangelistic music and also street-gospel, it was the assignment given to me that I was following. I am not answerable to anybody but God and since I am answerable to Him, my reward would come from Him and not man. I was able to take gospel music to some corners that other gospel musicians might not. I gave people songs that they could play beyond Sunday morning; people thanked me for providing gospel songs that can be played anytime and was not limited to just Sunday mornings. There were vacuums to be filled and I filled them; through that, the reward came along and heaven smiled on me. You just have to know your assignment and you have to be rugged and dogged about it.”
The multiple-award winning singer who hasn’t staged a church concert for about a decade told DA-PLAYPOINT that the reason is because she has faced other aspects of her ministry. She however spoke about her forthcoming concert and what fans should expect.
“For the first time, I would have an all-female worshippers on the line-up of my concert. Also, most of the female worshippers are lead singers from different churches. Many people do not know that Yinka Davies is a worshipper but she would be present to thrill the crowd on that day. My back-up singers of about 17 years ago would share the stage with me; the likes of Essence, Monique, Bola. They are all superstars now but we would share the stage together,” KSB said.

Harrysong dumps Five Star Music...starts own music label

Biggest shock of the month as Harrysong dumps Five Star Music to start his own music label.

There is about to be another artist/label drama/fight in the Nigerian entertainment industry. And this time, it's between Raggae Blues singer Harrysong and his Five Star Music label.

Late yesterday evening, Harrysong shared the poster on the left on his IG page, he didn't say what it was about but when Da-Playpoint went digging, we found out it was his own music label. Thing is, Harrysong still has a 2-year contract with Five Star Music and we hear Five Star Music will be coming for him...

We don't have all the details but according to someone in the know, Harrysong was unhappy with his contract and wanted out. Without informing Five Star, he started his own label.

A source close to the music label said he believes that the music label will take it up with Harrysong as they paid a lot of money to break his contract with his former music label, Kevin Luciano's Question Mark Records before they could even sign him and they have spent a lot of money on him and he still has contractual agreements with them until 2018.

Harrysong doesn't seem to care as he's already launched his own label.

"To my dearest husband peterpsquare, happy anniversary. Ours has been a long journey filled with lessons and unique experiences that have shaped who we have become today. I am happy to say that we are now best friends besides everything else. I have learned to listen and respect you more and you have learned to appreciate me as I am. I thank you for treating me like a lady and for always being there for me. I thank you for providing for our family and for putting us first at all times. It is not easy being married to a musician as people only see the glamorous side of this life but refuse to realize that you are a human being first with feelings and needs just as any one else. 11years together is not a joke. I see the non-glamorous side of you and still love you as you come.I love you! May God continue to bless and protect us in Jesus Name!⚘

This will make you feel old: Benita Okojie is getting married

In the late 90’s, Benita Okojie emerged on the music scene, rosy cheeked and full of innocence as she crooned ‘Osamudiamen….’ She was only 12 and it seemed she was never going to grow up.

Well, ‘little Benita’ is not so little anymore. She reappeared in the media couple of years ago looking all grown up, talking about graduating from university and getting married in the future.

That future has arrived. Few hours ago, it was reported that she was getting married to a long-term boyfriend later this month.
Married. Benita Okojie is getting married. At the appropriate age of 27, it shouldn’t raise any eyebrows.
But for many of us that saw her in her childhood, it certainly feels just like yesterday. And it makes us feel very old.
Congratulations Benita!

Comedian Seyi Law declares his interest to run for president in 2019

The comedian took to his Instagram and twitter page to declare his interest in running for president come 2019. According to him, it's time we vote for shift and change the status quo. Why aim low when you can aim high? I believe that the status quo must change for Nigeria to regain its place as a force to reckon with. The energy and knowledge of the Nigerian Youth must be put to positive use.

It is time we acknowledged the ingenuity of our vibrant men and women to ensure proper representation at the different levels of governance and not mere reduction to PAs and SAs.
We must ensure we retain our best brains in the country and adequately make provision to reform our educational institutions, healthcare system and industries. Our ways of learning must change to meet required standard.

I am ALETILE OLUWASEYITAN LAWRENCE aka SEYILAW and I am running for the highest office in the land in 2019.
